PORT ALLEN - The West Baton Rouge Museum on North Jefferson Avenue in Port Allen offers both history and modern art on its 6-acre campus.

It is the only museum in Louisiana that traces the history of sugar from the colonial period to the present day. Founded in 1968 by the West Baton Rouge Historical Association, it acts as the hub of the Port Allen Cultural Arts District.

The museum offers rotating exhibits, lots of free community events, and educational opportunities.

"We teach all kinds of historic trades to keep the tradition going, like blacksmithing, woodworking, fiber arts," Jeannie Luckett, West Baton Rouge Museum Programs and Partnerships Director, said. "And we have a Juke Joint on our grounds. The Juke Joint is an exhibit space, a performance space and an educational space."

Residents of West Baton Rouge get into the museum for free.

The museum's biggest event, the 31st annual SugarFest, is coming up on Oct. 4 to celebrate the sugarcane harvest.
