WBRZ Investigative Unit: Former Elayn Hunt major arrested for malfeasance, allegedly had inmate's children
ST. GABRIEL - A former high-ranking corrections officer at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center was arrested for allegedly having sex with an inmate and giving birth to twins.
Major Francis Smith turned herself in to the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office on Thursday.
She allegedly gave birth to the twins in the fall of 2025. According to the Department of Corrections, she resigned from her job in September.
During that month, the WBRZ Investigative Unit asked the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office about a tip that an inmate was the father. The sheriff’s office said they were investigating the complaint but would have to wait for DNA testing to confirm the alleged relationship.
At that time, Sheriff Brett Stassi said if it were true, Smith would likely be looking at a malfeasance charge and not rape, as the relationship was consensual.
Smith reportedly was placed on leave and given the choice to either resign or be fired. The inmate was transferred to Angola, where he is serving a life sentence for murder.
Smith was booked with malfeasance in office, specifically for sexual conduct with an inmate.
