BATON ROUGE — Law officers chased a man accused of drag racing from Baton Rouge to Denham Springs late Friday night, ending in a violent crash late Friday night.

BRPD attempted to stop Kane Mamadou, 23, for drag racing near the intersection of north Sherwood Forest Drive and south Choctaw Drive just before midnight. Officers chased the driver onto I-12 until he exited at Range Avenue. Mamadou crashed into another vehicle and fled the scene on foot, but was quickly captured by police.

Arrest documents say Mamadou disregarded three stop signs, went over 150 miles per hour, drove into opposing lanes of traffic and disregarded three red lights during the pursuit.

One witness who did not want to be identified by name said she was staying at a hotel when the sound of the crash woke her.

The woman said she saw several police cars fly by her hotel window, and the sound of the loud crash frightened her.

"My heart kind of took a couple of beats," she said. "I told my son 'Hey, they're in a high-speed chase,' and he was like 'where?' and I said look at the police."

According to police, Mamadou said he ran because "he believed he could get away and that he was stupid."

Police booked Mamadou for aggravated flight, reckless operation of a vehicle, resisting an officer and driving without insurance.

Video shows law enforcement spraying a vehicle with fire extinguishers before it was towed.

Officers were seen using K-9 units and drones.
