BATON ROUGE - President Trump endorsed Representative Julia Letlow on Saturday as a potential candidate for one of Louisiana's spots in the United States Senate.

Letlow represents the 5th Congressional District, which includes East Baton Rouge, Livingston and Ascension parishes. At this time, she has not announced a campaign for the Senate.

"Should she decide to enter this Race, Julia Letlow has my Complete and Total Endorsement," Trump said. "RUN, JULIA, RUN!!!"

His full statement is available below:

Letlow responded to the endorsement on social media, writing, "My mission is clear: to ensure the nation our children inherit is safer and stronger. This United States Senate seat belongs to the people of Louisiana, because we deserve conservative leadership that will not waver."

Current U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, who was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict the president in the 2021 impeachment trial following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, commented on Trump's endorsement.

"I'm proudly running for re-election as a principled conservative who gets things done for the people of Louisiana," Cassidy wrote. "If Congresswoman Letlow decides to run I am confident I will win."

When asked about his vote to impeach the president in 2021, Cassidy told WBRZ, "I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I take that seriously. And my complete understanding of that case was, 'this is the vote to support and defend the constitution of the United States.'"

Letlow isn't the only candidate running for Cassidy's seat in the Senate. Other candidates include Republicans St. Tammany Parish Councilwoman Kathy Seiden, Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta, Louisiana State Representative Julie Emerson, State Senator Blake Miguez, State Treasurer John Fleming, as well as Democrats Jamie Davis Jr. and Tracie Burke of Gretna.

Fleming, who previously served as an advisor to Trump, announced his candidacy for the seat in 2024

Louisiana recently changed from a jungle primary, which allowed all candidates to run at the same time, to a closed primary system, limiting the ballot to members of the same political party.

This means Cassidy must win the Republican primary to advance to the general election.

The qualifying period for all party primary office candidates will begin on Feb. 11.
