BATON ROUGE — A Baton Rouge couple have been charged with child abuse two months after their toddler daughter was found unresponsive with severe internal injuries and infant son was found human-bite marks on his body.

Ja’alyiah Mojica, 23, and her boyfriend Nylan Lott, 22, were charged Thursday by the district attorney’s office with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and cruelty to a juvenile. Mojica was also charged with obstruction of justice by tampering with evidence, according to court records.

The parents were initially arrested in August after their daughter was found unresponsive. Mojica allegedly told detectives that the child complained about stomach pains earlier that week and attributed the pain to pizza. The following day, the child vomited before becoming unresponsive. She was later transported to a local hospital and rushed into surgery.

According to officers, medical staff compared the child's injuries to what would be sustained in a severe vehicle crash.

Mojica and Lott remain in local jail, each held on a $200,000 bond.
