BATON ROUGE — A man accused of shooting another person along Byron Avenue allegedly held his victim at gunpoint as retaliation for a shooting that happened the day before, Baton Rouge Police arrest records say.

According to arrest documents, BRPD officers responded to a shooting near the corner of Byron Avenue and Bank Street around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, where they found a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for his injuries, BRPD noted.

The victim identified the man who shot him as 26-year-old Quintin Black. Before Black shot the man, he struck him on the head with a black handgun, knocking him down. Another person who was with Black, whom the victim called "half a head," ran away before this happened, police noted.

After attacking the man, Black began asking him questions about another shooting that happened the day before while holding the man at gunpoint. WBRZ previously reported on the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Jaymirus Stewart along the same street; 28-year-old Darren Cooks was arrested on first-degree murder charges as a result.

The victim told police that his girlfriend eventually got between him and Black. At the same time, another man at the home shot at Black, to which Black returned fire, police noted.

The victim noted that Black was firing his gun while running away after this.

Seven bullet casings were found at the scene when police arrived.

Black, who was believed injured, was not found during a BRPD drone search after the scene.

The next day, a man later identified as Black was found along Evangeline Street and taken to the hospital.

On Monday, a week after being found and hospitalized, Black was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police said that Black was previously convicted of domestic abuse battery in 2023, simple robbery in 2020 and possession of Xanax in 2020. He was prevented from owning a firearm due to these convictions.
