BRUSLY — West Baton Rouge and Iberville Parish residents can safely dispose of household chemicals, electronics and other toxic materials during a free collection event this weekend.

The Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 8 a.m. to noon at Alexander Park in Brusly.

Organized to help prevent hazardous items from ending up in local landfills, the drop-off site will accept a wide range of household items, including:

- Chemicals & Solvents: Paint, paint thinners, gasoline (under five gallons), pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, acids, bleach, cleaners and bug sprays.

- Batteries & Bulbs: Automotive and household batteries, aerosol cans and fluorescent bulbs.

- Electronics & Equipment: Microwaves, old electronics, fire extinguishers, cooking oil and tires.

Certain items will not be accepted, including medical waste, ammunition, fireworks, large gas cylinders, appliances, power tools, construction debris and containers larger than 5 gallons.

Dow, Keep Iberville Beautiful and Keep West Baton Rouge Beautiful are sponsoring the event. Attendees are encouraged to review the full list of accepted materials before arriving at the park.
