BATON ROUGE - Residents at Jaguar Plaza, an apartment building off Harding Boulevard, said Sunday night's officer-involved shooting stemmed from a dispute between neighbors.

According to BRPD Chief TJ Morse, officers were called to the complex after reports that a man was threatening people with a rifle just before 6 p.m. on Sunday. Morse said the man also threatened officers, which led to officers firing shots.

"Officers were dispatched here to an apartment complex. He was threatening other people with a rifle, so officers came to address that situation. They came here; that individual was still armed. He threatened officers with that weapon. They had to take action to defend their lives," Morse told WBRZ at the scene.

Floyd Harris, who says he is the suspect's roommate, says it all started with an alleged car burglary. He says his roommate was outside the apartments, venting his frustrations that evening.

"He was outside. He was venting. Whether or not he said anything to upset anyone, I don't know. One of the neighbors called and lied, and said he had an AR-15 and a handgun and was brandishing it," Harris said.

Harris says his roommate was holding a handgun, not a rifle as preliminary reports from BRPD detailed. He says a neighbor gave false information to police. Harris also told WBRZ he was inside the building when the shooting happened.

"I hear a gunshot go off. He opens the door and says, 'They shot me,' and falls," Harris said.

Harris said officers then entered his apartment after the shooting and confiscated an automatic weapon he kept in his room. WBRZ has reached out for confirmation from BRPD on the confiscation of any weapons.

Police say the suspect underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition afterward.

"The officers were going on the information they were given at the time when they received the call. When someone gives false information, potentially getting that boy shot, that's..." Harris said.
