PORT ALLEN - Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis was allegedly charged for DWI in West Baton Rouge Parish, according to a report by WWL.

The incident occurred over the weekend when Louisiana State Police conducted a traffic stop that led to Lewis being charged with DWI.

Troopers said that Lewis was processed and released on a summons due to the West Baton Rouge jail refusing to book people charged with first-offense DWI, as it is classified as a misdemeanor. 

Lewis represents District 3, which covers the River Parishes from the New Orleans area up to West Baton Rouge. 

Lewis released the following statement in response to the charge: 

"This weekend, I was stopped by law enforcement for a headlight related issue. I cooperated fully and the situation was resolved promptly. While I was ultimately issued a DWI summons, I will be working with lawyers to contest the charge. Out of respect for the process and those involved, I will defer to them for further comment on this matter at this time.

I have great respect for the men and women who serve our community in law enforcement, and I believe everyone, myself included, is accountable to the law. I appreciate the professionalism shown during the encounter. I also take my responsibilities to the press and the public seriously.

I understand the gravity of the situation why our communities concerned. As I always have, I plan to remain accountable through both my words and my actions. My hope is that our focus remains on the consistent, good work we have accomplished advocating for Louisiana’s citizens."
