BATON ROUGE — A classic Southern biscuit is getting a Louisiana-inspired twist at Parish Biscuit Company, which recently brought its family-owned restaurant from Lafayette to Baton Rouge.

The restaurant puts a local spin on breakfast and brunch with a menu built around buttermilk biscuits, Louisiana ingredients and dishes inspired by flavors from across the state.

George Monsour, general manager of Parish Biscuit Company, said the concept grew from a desire to offer something different from the typical corporate restaurant experience.

“It was from going to different places and realizing that the cookie-cutter corporate approach that doesn’t have what Louisiana people want is missing,” Monsour said.

That philosophy carries over to the menu, where many of the signature biscuits are named after Louisiana parishes.

The Acadia, one of the restaurant’s signature offerings, features an open-faced biscuit topped with fried catfish and crawfish étouffée, finished with green onions. The Lafayette features fried boudin paired with Creole aioli.

Another option, the Saint Martin, combines brisket with blueberry barbecue sauce, a fried egg, pimento cheese and candied jalapeños for a mix of sweet, savory and spicy flavors.

The menu also offers a sweeter take on the biscuit with its biscuit shortcake, topped with whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries.

While the menu features plenty of Louisiana-inspired combinations, the names are also part of the restaurant’s personality. The team draws from parish names that work well with the restaurant’s dishes and overall concept.

Behind the menu is a family passion for cooking. When asked whether owner Steven Laborde was always cooking while she was growing up, his daughter Madison said food had long been part of their family.

“Yes! So my dad is an amazing cook... he got it from his parents,” Madison said.

Parish Biscuit Company’s Baton Rouge location brings the Lafayette-born concept to a new audience, with a menu that combines a Southern staple with familiar Louisiana flavors.

The restaurant is located at 220 W. Lee Drive in Baton Rouge. Customers can find more information about the restaurant and its menu at parishbiscuit.co.
