Now with a well-defined center of circulation, Tropical Depression Five has officially formed offshore. Expected to intensify and become Tropical Storm Edouard by Monday night or Tuesday, the system will continue tracking through the northern Gulf. A landfall is expected on Tuesday somewhere between Houston and Lake Charles. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Cameron Parish and points west until Port Bolivar, Texas. No tropical alerts are in effect locally.

The primary impacts from the storm will be concentrated offshore and across the Tropical Storm Warning area. East Texas can expect 3-6” of heavy rainfall, with southwest Louisiana projected to receive 2-3”. Coastal areas within the warning region should also prepare for potential tropical-storm-force wind gusts and a 1-3 foot storm surge at the immediate shoreline.

Notably, this will be a compact system, with peak winds tightly concentrated around the center of circulation. Consequently, direct impacts will be confined to a relatively small footprint. However, such systems often intensify or weaken erratically with little warning.
