AG Liz Murrill files response to SEC, continues to request case against LSU be dismissed
BATON ROUGE — Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill once again asked a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit from the SEC against LSU, saying it is "unclear why the SEC has not dismissed this case."
In a response supporting LSU's motion to dismiss, Murrill argued against the SEC's filing from last week that said LSU's recruitment of fifth-year, international basketball players constituted expulsion as a "very real threat" and confirmed a lack of institutional control.
The conference cited LSU's recruitment of former Boston Celtics guard RJ Luis as the school flouting the conference's professionalism rules. LSU chose not to roster Luis, who was not cleared to play earlier Tuesday, which Murrill uses in her argument to say the men's basketball roster is not violating any rules.
"The SEC's new claim is demonstrably false," the filing says. "As early as September 23, Coach Will Wade publicly said: 'We’re going to abide by what the SEC tells us to abide by.' That was at the same press conference from which the SEC plucks phrases like 'We’re going to be unapologetic about it.'"
Murrill also argues that the court lacks proper jurisdiction and is an improper venue, as well as saying the SEC has no viable claim to say LSU is violating its First Amendment right in its attempts to sign the aforementioned players.
"This case should be dismissed," the conclusion reads.
