NEW IBERIA — State Sen. Blake Miguez’s official domicile is in New Iberia, according to an opinion from Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office.

The La. Illuminator reported the AG's findings, which say "Senator Miguez’s domicile is still in Senate District 22 even though he has a residence in East Baton Rouge Parish." Miguez could have been vulnerable to removal from his current elected position if official domicile was determined to be in East Baton Rouge Parish.

That residence is located outside the Sixth Congressional District, where he is currently running for office. However, candidates or officeholders are not required to live in the U.S. House districts where they are running.

Miguez's spokesperson, Chris Pack, characterized the inquiry into Miguez's primary residence as a "taxpayer-funded publicity stunt... without merit" to benefit Rick Edmonds, one of Miguez's opponents.

"Rick now owes Louisiana voters an explanation for why he pushed this nonsense when he had every reason to know it was baseless and whether he thinks it’s appropriate for taxpayers to foot the bill for his desperate political stunt," the statement said.

WBRZ is hosting a televised debate for candidates running for Louisiana's Sixth Congressional District seat, including Miguez and Edmonds, on Oct. 9.
