GONZALES — A Houston man has been arrested in connection with a scam that cost an elderly victim approximately $275,000, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Bobby Webre said detectives arrested Zulkar Nain, 34, after an investigation into electronic communications targeting the victim between May and August.

During the scam, someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer told the victim there was an active warrant for their arrest and instructed them to send money through cryptocurrency ATMs, gift cards and FedEx shipments.

As the scam continued, more money was demanded and threats of violence were made against the victim. Out of fear, the victim later met with Nain in person and completed three separate cash transactions totaling $90,000.

Nain faces charges including theft over $25,000, exploitation of the elderly, illegal transmission of monetary funds, false personation of a peace officer and extortion.

He was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine whether anyone else was involved.
