WATSON — Two fights at area high schools in the same week led to arrests and at least one student being sent to the hospital, even as national data shows school violence is on a decline.

A viewer shared a fight video with WBRZ after a brawl at East Ascension High School Monday afternoon. Emergency services were called, and the Gonzales Police Department arrested a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old.

"Those kids definitely slammed each other down on the ground for sure," one Gonzales resident said in response to the pair of fights.

Then multiple students became involved in a fight at Live Oak High School on Thursday morning. A parent who spoke to WBRZ off camera said her child was sent to the hospital as a result of his injuries.

Both fights happened as national data point to a downward trend in school violence. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the rate of students victimized by on-campus violence dropped from 24 per 1,000 students in 2018 to 15.6 per 1,000 students four years later.

District officials would not discuss specific students or incidents, saying their refusal to answer questions was meant to protect students' privacy. That included questions about whether students who recorded the fight videos would face disciplinary action.
